might be selling the explorer. so i have some questions.

ihave the 86 ranger with a 2.9. will the 4.0 motor bolt up to the 2.9 tranny?

will the motor mounts be the same? i know ill need a new radiator. im assuming ill need new exhaust. what about the fuel lines? i really wanna swap the 2.9 for the 4.0.

please list everything i will need. if i dont need much hoping to swap this before sunday.

yes the trans and motor mount will work but you will need alot of other parts off the doaner truck
is you 2.9 carborated or f i and are they both auto or stick and what trans do they have

engine is from a 93 ford explorer with a 5 speed. both trucks r 5 speeds. the 2.9 is fi. i dont have a doner vehicle. just the engine and the 86. figured id get whatever else is needed from the jy as i needed it. which is y i am trying to get a parts list together. and what about the wiring harness?

2.9 never came in carb.

The 4.0 will blow up most 2.9 trannies pretty quick.

You will need the 4.0 engine harness, headlight harness (the ignition harness is part of it) and the dash harness. The body harness can be adapted to work, but if you use a 4.0 fuel pump in-tank the gauge won't read right.

I know that the stock 2.9 dual pump system is capable of producing enough pressure to properly run a 4.0 OHV, but I can also think of half-a dozen hypothetical problems it could cause. I'm sure it will run though.

are you fu***** out of your mind

where the hell did you come up with this

and you dont need all that bull shit rumpranger and myself did his swap 40 out of a 93 and put it in the 87 ranger that had a 2.9

you will need a 4.0 clutch and fly wheel off up to a 94 in 95 they went to a 8bolt flywheel and crank

Calm down there little one....

There wasn't ever a Carb'd 2.9 from the factory in an RBV.

The 4.0 WILL destroy most of the trannies behind the 2.9. The FM series in particular. If he has an M5OD, which I doubt given the year of his truck, then he would be fine.

To make this swap easy as possible, You DO need the entire harness, from the drivers side firewall all the way 'round to the power distribution and through the firewall to the computer. If you were to swap in the dash from the donor, it would be nearly all plug and play.

While you have this under way, I would swap to the single high pressure pump in the tank. You are going to have to mix and match fuel lines anyway...

well i need this thing to move soon as possible. cuz im also in the process of moving. but i dont plan on using this truck to furniture its to tall haha. so im just gonna plugs it into the tranny thats in it. and once i get settled into the new house. ill swap in a rebuilt 4.0 tranny with 1k miles. im lookin at buyin a 93 exploder for 300 bucks for parts. and possibly swapping most everything from the engine bay. and the dash. i dont really like the 86 dash. i know this tranny is shot or wont last long. there was only a bolt holding the starter in and the bell housing was missing 3.. and it did clunk goin down the road. and yes i want this swap to be simple as possible. i dont wanna be driving it in a yeaR and have something go wrong then have to check all the spliced wires for a fried one,

as far as i can tell it would be simplest to just swap fuel lines all the way back?

and get a whole wiring harness for a 4.0?

and seeing as this is a 2.9 standard cab. would it be easier to just buy a 93 4.0 fuel tank and throw it in? that should have the single high pressure pump in the tank right? and the tank should be bigger if i get one from a super cab.
