Could somebody please clarify what I need to do for the wiring converting from a 2.9L starter to the 4.0L starter?

I THINK what I have to do is connect the wire that went to the 2.9L starter to the 4.0L starter instead. I then route a small wire from the 4.0 starter to the 2.9 starter solenoid (where on the solenoid?).

Do I need to move where the large wire that went to the 2.9L starter originates from? Should it originate at the battery instead of the solenoid?

Thanks!

the heavy wire to the starter needs to be always hot. run it from the same post on the solenoid that the battery hooks to. the smaller wire on the starter needs to go to the other post on the solenoid. it will get power when you turn the key to 'start'

Are you sure about this? How does the starter stop? I think the starter wire should be connected to the solenoid opposite from the battery side.

BUT I haven't done this swap before, and have not looked closely at these starting systems, could someone clarify this for me?
Thanks,

Richard

I'm pretty sure kunar is correct. There are two posts on that relay (I think that's what it is called) that is under the hood. It's right near the battery. One post has constant power (where the battery connects to it) and on the other side is only hot when the ignition is turned on (when you go to start it). As soon as it starts (and you let off of the key in cab) it kills the power to that one post on the relay, which kills the circuit and the starter stops spinning.

Hope that helps.

Cube, lemme make this really easy. The original starter wire from your 2.9 will fit over one of the terminals on the 4.0 starter and be too small to fit over the other one. Leave that one alone at the starter relay near the battery and hook it to the terminal it fits on at the starter.

Then go get a 60" piece of double-eyed battery cable, hook one end to the forward post (where the battery hot cable goes), run it along side the original cable and hook it to the big terminal on the starter.

That's what I thought at first too when I did it. The problem with that is the internals of this starter are such that if you hook it up that way when the starter spins it creates feed-back voltage and keeps running for a few seconds after you let off the key. Real quick way to burn up a starter.
