I've got a 2.9 right now but it's runnin' real rough in my '89. I found a 3.0 though that's commin' from a '94. Does anybody know if there's any issues with this swap?

Pretty sure that the 4.0 would far less troublesome.
but....you would have to get the engine + tranny & mounts and all wiring sensors...etc. just to name a few.

Pretty sure the 4.0 would bolt to your exsisting tranny.

I wouldn't mess w/ 3.0L unless I were getting it REALLY cheap with the engine, mounts, wiring, transmission, etc.

2.3L would make just a little less power with better fuel ecomony (and they never die), 4.0L gets worse mileage but more power. 3.0L is a car engine, you really need to rev it up to get power of it, but they are pretty solid engines for the most part.

4.0L will eat a 2.9L tranny. 2.9Ls eat 2.9L trannys, LOL.

Might be worth while to figure out why the 2.9L is running rough (cost wise). Could be something simple...

:3gears:i beat on my ranger shit PLENTY, and as long as i kept up on maintence of them i never had a issue, hell my old 87 ahd the original trans still good when the truck died at 347k miles due to me killin the motor in a hole, well that trans has gone 50k miles more in another ranger gettin ebat on every day and its still kickin strong

Same here, I've put my trans through some stuff, but utilmately what it boils down to, a 2.9L transmission is not going to last reasonably long behind a 4.0L.

Luck of the draw, you see guy that only had a A4LD trans for a short amount of time before it went, then there are others who have not had much problems. I don't know the history of mine, but I've owned my truck for at least 5 years, and mine still works, even w/ a bigger cam. I can't say that the fluid is red, but somehow it still works. I think my aftermarket transmission cooler is really making the difference in keeping things cooler, but who knows, it's getting pulled soon anyhow.

Thanx

Thanks for all the info and comments. a lil bit more info is that I'm gettin the motor and all accesories on the cheap. I mean real cheap. and second behind it is a 5 speed trany ( 4 with final drive).
