I just bought a 89 ranger 4x4 with a blown (rod through block) 2.9 and a manual trans, also included in deal was a 91 2wd ranger with a 3.0 and also a manual that the front suspension has rusted out and collapsed, engine runs great though. My question is this, is this 2.9 to 3.0 swap pretty straight forward? Any info would be appreciated.

If you want to retain 4x4, you are going to have to find a 4x4 tranny from another 3L. The 2.9l tranny wont bolt to the 3L

I think the easiest thing for you to do, as hard as it is having the 3.0L there is looking for a 4.0L to swap in there if you don't just want to source another 2.9L The 2.9-4.0 sap is pretty straight forward as far as I know.
