Is there an easy way to find TDC without taking a valve cover off? I need to make sure I'm not 180 degrees off & only have the flywheel mark as a reference & no timing light.

Buy a brass fitting, same size as spark plug, and attach a hose to the end of it. Remove #1 plug and screw the hose in its place. Put open end in your mouth and hand crank until you feel pressure building...keep cranking until pressure turns into suction. That will be an approximate TDC on compression. Pop the distributor cap and see where your rotor is. If it's 180 off, adjust.

Remove sparkplug, put finger or thumb over hole, crank. When finger gets pushed by air you are very close to tdc. Use breaker bar and socket on crank snout to turn engine back to TDC according to marks.

Just loosen the #1 spark plug, so you can hear escaping air, when you hear air coming out you are approaching Spark TDC for #1, when TDC mark is lined up set distributor

thanks!

Got it sorted out. Dizzy was just a couple of teeth off, pointing at #6 instead of #1 @ TDC. Moved the rotor button/shaft about an inch & it's running again!

That's easier than my way. Why didn't I think of that ?.....:icon_confused:

Because if you do it wrong you can strip the hole.

I do it the way you posted. Always have, never had a problem.
