I am in the middle of swapping a 2.9 with a 4.0. I am having electrical issues with the motor compartment. I am looking for a diagram with the connections labels for the 4.0. samething for my 89 ranger. I have the motor from the explorer in already and the harness from the explorer in also. Now I have read up on many threads on here about a bronco 2 swap but nothing on a ranger swap. need help fast.

First off pretty much everything Bronco II and Ranger is the same.

Second: Online Repair Info

The username and password are both: tech

Go there and scroll down to the auto repair reference center.

I can't find it now, but there are only like 3 wires that go to the 4.0 harness that have to be spliced for the truck to run. (You just have no gauges or anything that way.) I know two of them are the fuel pump wiring and the power to the ECU relay from the ignition switch

Thanks..

Have you done the swap? I got a donnor explorer but the trans was out. So I chose to use the auto trans in my ranger. Can I use the same connections from the explorer harness to connect with my trans harness? also the the ranger connections for that run to the rear are differnt. Should I replace the ranger electrical with the explorer electrical? Also, If I change the dash harness from the explorer with the ranger do I still have to splice anything? I am trying to avoide splicing. One more thing, there are some wires coming from the left and right fender wells to the front of the ranger that have two connections. The explorer does not have the same wires. Must these connections need attention? Thanks for the help..

I have done this swap, with an 89 Ranger dash and a 94 Explorer engine harness. The connections are slightly different, yes, but not drastically. In fact, I only had to add two wires to the Explorer harness, one for each of the rear tail lights.

The trick of it was that I took a 93 Ranger engine harness, used the white plug off of it, and then one by one I took the pins out of the Explorer harness and put them in the Ranger plug. I ended up with about 6 extra wires for things that my truck just doesn't have like ABS power, power seats, fog lights, etc.
