hey guys please if you can help me out. i just got my 87 ranger stx back from a guy who put a new tranny in it for me. he had to move the motor up two inches cause it come out of a 90. now heres my issue one minute it runs like a champ the next minute it starts to miss real bad and the only cure is to put it to the floor. it runs good floored but any other throttle positon it misses and wants to shut off any idea at all where to begin?. i think its a spark issue because when it does it if you floor it it back fires through the hollowed out cat. now the guy steamed cleaned the engine thats the only other thing hes done to it. i am sorry to keep going on and on but i wanna be sure to mention it all. we picked the truck up last friday night. it started to act stupid then. we drove it that saturday and it ran fine for about a week then it started again. and today i jumped in it and it seems like its running good again. please help i miss driving this truck and want it back very badly

I have the same problem with my 3.0L.. At the initial start it almost needs a shot of gas to keep it running but after it warms up its good to go.. Battery light fluctuates something fierce as it idles rough on warm up. Shuts off sometimes too. Still havent figured out the root of this problem yet. I've checked vacuum lines, sensors, fuel pump, injectors, battery.. almost everything but still happens from time to time. Thankfully the engine is being swapped soon enough..

Well, I generally don't advocate steam cleaning engines because this stuff happens. JC, I'd start by checking your O2 sensor and its wires. Mine separated and she did exactly what you are describing. If it's the O2 then you will eventually get to a point where it only runs at wide open.

CraKel, for you, I'd look at your IAC, if you can get her running on her own and pull that plug, and she doesn't die out right, its an IAC. I doubt your problem is the same as JC's though.

Has anybody bothered to check their throttle position sensor? Sometimes they can get dead spots and will usually work at full open and full closed throttle and not much in between....

I changed my tps, pcv, vacuum lines, have my ait installed into my aftermarket air intake pipe and it works, cause when I take it out you can here the change. Iac is good, no codes being read and have played with almost every other sensor lol. Have changed both O2 sensors still with no luck fixing it, the battery fluctuations is illusive though.. why does it do this?

If you're getting battery fluctuations I'd get the battery and alternator tested. And I'd be checking the wiring. Fluctuations in voltage can screw everything up.
