2.9 starting to have problems?

i have a 1989 ranger xlt. yesterday i started it up let warm up. on the way home it started sputtering. everytime i would stop and put it first gear it wanted to turn off i would give it some gas and would sputter. what could be the problem??

Could be SOOO many things

start simple...
has the fuel filter been changed recently? if not change it
cleaning the IAC couldn't hurt either

Mine has had many problems but what yours is doing sounds like what mine did when the IAC went bad....but try cleaning it like IMenriched said.

I'd pull codes. Mine was doing this and it turned out to be the engine coolant temperature sensor - you can ohm it out and see if it's bad.
