2.9 running super rought at random times... PLEASE HELP

So my 2.9 ranger runs really weird at times... Sounds like its missing on more then one cylinder... back fires has no power whats so ever wont go over 45mph.. then its back to normal lots of power like it should have... then back to no power cant figure it out... changed the TFI new plugs and wires aswell... Its really weird cause its only sometimes... It will run for a few days just fine then all of a sudden it starts running like shit... Any info on the possible problems would be great thnaks

Check and wiggle all your connectors and make sure your pos and neg connections are excellent.

everything is in good condition... could it be time for a new cap and rotor maybe??

Try 2 things, Dugan and I have been playing with this EXACT issue for about 6 months now..

The fix (in my case) was replace the IN TANK sock on the fuel pickup, AND the TPS up on the throttle body.

Both where Issues that caused this weird loss of power problem for me.

is the check engine light coming on at idle?

it might be your o2 sensor because mine felt like a misfire at idle and when i got to a higher rpm it went away along with the check engine light. hope it helps

Intermittent faults are almost allways wiring/connector related. Clean all the connectors with elect cleaner and use dielectric grease to put them together. Sand all grounds metal to metal find the ones to the computer. inspect and fix any burnt cracked or broken wires especially around the exhaust system O2 wires?

+1 on wires and connections....my plug in for the coil was bad and the idle would change when you moved the wires even though it looked good. A friend found the prob after I cleaned the connections and it wouldn't start at all. Even a diagnostic computer usually can't find the problem until it fails.

I don't have a check engine light.. just when key is on but not motor.. then you turn the engine on and an the light goes away which is normal, so it isn't throwing any codes... I have yet to check the codes... I've done spark test while it was running like crap, all 6 cylinders had good powerful spark... This lead me to think its a fuel issue... It was back firing tho the intake which means its a lean misfire also making my think its got to be a fuel issue... Do the fuel regulators go bad on the ranger... Im gonna pull the other regulator off my other ranger and see if it makes a different..

Injectors do go 'bad'...but not in the electrical sense in most cases. Normally it's the small fuel socks/filters installed into the in-port of each injector. They will get bunged up with rust and dirt (yeah, even with frequent replacement of the fuel filters).

The regulators also go bad---normally you can pull the vacuum line off the regulator and it will be full of fuel. That would create an over-rich mixture, as the engine vacuum pulls fuel and dumps it into the intake manifold.

Just a couple of ideas.

I replaced the regulator today along with the fuel filter... Nothing changed still same off and on bogging... I have to pull the intake and change all the injectors out with some 5.0 mustang ones i guess.. Im gonna pull the codes tomorrow and see what they read

Honestly.... Dugan and I had this EXACT problem... the fuel sock IN the tank (not the fuel filter....

Then.... change the TPS (Throttle Position Sensor) , this is a 2 for 2 fix.

I'll go find the original post between Dugan and I, and you can read it... It will save you a ton of both time AND money.

Hey thanks! my tanks needs to be pulled anyways to seal up a leak cause it wont pass the smog test lol... when i pull the tank ill make sure to check that out...
