2.9 Re-ring rebuild

I'm starting to work on my 2.9 this weekend. I'll be putting a rering kit in it. This is my first engine rebuild. With that being said, is there anything I need to remember that would be easy to forget. I have the manual and have watched numerous videos on engine rebuild but nothing specific to the 2.9. I just don't want to overlook something that could be costly in the end. I'll be sure to take pics of my steps and post as I go.

Start by reading carefully - you say you are rebuilding a 2.9, this is the 2.8 forum.

Double check the piston fit. If you are near a machine shop, you can get the pistons expanded. Many younger mechanics have claimed expanded pistons is not good. I tore down a 2.8 with them and they were just fine after more than 50,000 miles.

Doing a re-ring job used to be called an overhaul, not a rebuild. I would consider doing the cam bearings too if you have the proper tool available to replace them. (I've done three 2.8's and two needed cam bearings - they were near the end AND one set from a big name manufacturer were too thick and I had to swap them.

Once an overhaul is done, you should get another 100,000 miles.
