My 86 BII started smoking on me last week, i bought it with 77K original miles and it had spent the past few years garaged kept so it had very little use on the engine or tranny(auto). I drove it back from tampa(4.5-5 hour drive) with no problems, it just had a slight shake when it was in overdrive at lower rpms at 40mph or faster.

Well i changed cap, rotor, wires, plugs(had a little oil on them), fuel filter which was really bad, fuel pressure regulator, trans fluid and filter. And after all this great stuff was done...

She started smoking at random times and the shake has gotten a little worse. The smoke is not thick black smoke, its like a light grayish blue almost white at times. and the shaking occurs at lower rpms with gentle throttle if i accel harder it smooths out... I need to leave to New York as soon as i get this fixed and its a hell of a drive from Florida...

Any one have any advice? i got the pressure checker for the coolant system to check if its antifreeze i'm burning, but i thinking its oil or gas burning...

i had the same problem with my 97 i ran some fuel injector cleaner and put some high mileage oil and within 20 miles of just putting around my naborhood they both went away, i was really suprized how well they worked....id start there

just put marvel mystery oil in the gas tank and rislone to the oil. it ran home just fine with out smoking then i drove it back out to my dads(12 miles) let it sit for a bit while i messed around checking the coolant pressure and vac lines. then i started it up and drove around the block once and the smoking was back it was still a grayish blue smoke not really heavy but enough to be a problem...

also my idle is higher than it should be, its around 1100 and it moves are a bit now. could the air idle valve be the cause of all this or like a faulty O2 sensor or map sensor, how could i check these with out a code puller? would one of those failing cause the smoke or should i check into my valve seals and how hard are they for a do it yourselfer?

could a faulty coil cause it too smoke? also i just pulled the number two plug cause i heard a slight tapping from that side of the engine and the spark plug had burnt oil on it and a bit of fresh oil on it, most of the other plugs have some burnt up oil on them too, i just changed them not even a week ago... could the smoke becoming from worn valve seals and how hard are they too replace? need to get this done tonight or monday morning... any help would be great.

A complete tune up is a good place to start, which it sounds like you've done.
How about the PVC valve??

you may have a bad head gasket...may...but the 2.9's tend to crack the heads.

Have you done a compression check?
when changing the plugs, take alook at the old ones....did any look fairly clean in comparisson to the others??

yes...the AIC does control idle, try cleaning it really well with some carb cleaner. the plunger inside needs to move. If it can't be freed up, then maybe a new one is in order

If it is an automatic transmission.

Something else to check would be the vacuum modulator on the right side of the transmission, there is a vacuum line going to it. If the diaphram in it is blown the engine will suck the trans, fluid in and burn it causeing white smoke and fouled plugs.

Pull the vacuum line off the modulator and see if it is wet or trans, fluid runs out, if so! it is bad

Ok i checked the vac line off the modulator and it was dry, so i went with changing the valve seals. i got all of them changed except for the number 3 cylinder because the spring compressor wouldn't fit in the space between the A/C and engine, any one have any tips for getting at that without pulling apart the A/C?

Well i found some old cork gasket pieces blocking my oil passages and quite alot of gunk build up around the valves, got everything clean out and put back together with alot of assembly lube, got the truck back together and now it runs great, tons more power, shifts smoothly no shacking or vibrations any where its like a whole new engine. Its amazing what a good cleaning and lube can do for your truck.

thanks too all for there help and advice, gotta love this site
