I have a 1988 ford ranger 4x4 automatic.i was wondering in which gear would i have more power and go faster. In drive or overdrive?

Well, overdrive is for highway driving. The only difference between putting the transmission in drive or overdrive is in overdrive you get that 5th gear.

When you put it in D (not overdrive), you have a four speed transmission. But when you put it in overdrive, you get that fifth cruising gear.

There's not really any power loss. Obviously if you're going up a steep hill, you're going to want to kick it down into 4th gear to get the RPM's up.

Hope that makes sense.

Isn't the a4ld a 4 speed tranny? So od would be 4th and d would be 3 etc?

The C3 design was succeeded by the A4LD 4-speed automatic. - wiki

drive means that the final gear ratio is 1:1, for every rotation of the input shaft the output shaft rotates once.

overdrive means that the final gear ratio is greater than 1:1, meaning that for every rotation of the input shaft the output shaft rotates more than one full revolution.

to put it simply in drive you will a lower top speed, but it will get there faster. your engine will run at a higher rpm at crusing speed so your fuel economy will suffer

in overdrive you will have a higher top speed, but it will take longer to get there. your engine will run at a lower rpm when at the same cruising speed, there for burning less fuel, causing less heat, and wear and tear.

basically put it in OD when not driving in stop-and-go situations, if you're on the highway and need to accelerate quickly your trans will shift out of OD and into whatever gear is required for the amount of acceleration nessiccary (assuming you have an auto trans. which i see the OP does)

put it in either one.. its an AUTOMATIC. if you want power you naturally push the gas pedal down, the transmission will select the best gear.

if you want to prepare to accelerate downshift into D, it will shift into 3rd and then you can mash the pedal so there is no delay in shifting

edit: pissed, this is a dead thread
