Hello, just picked up a spare 2.9 for my 87 ranger. Has anyone on here done a real world performance buildup on a 2.9 in their trucks? I know the downfalls of this engine already, (head cracking) and the world products recast heads for it. I also have Sven Pruetts excellent ford 60 degree V6 book. I dont know how to do a search on this site to see anything. Any leads or help appreciated. THANKS! Matt
I'm deep into a restoration of an 1988 GT myself. Retaining the original engine probably means nothing, but that is the plan.
"A real world performance build up" for me is the whole truck as it will be used to haul motorcycles, Autocross, and hopefully open track days on a road course just for fun.
Fuel system is done with all new components including the tank
Suspension has new shocks and James Duff Traction bars
Brake system is done with all new components including drilled and slotted rotors with Earl's Performance braided lines
The engine is now in process. Any extra torque while retaining some fuel economy would be great! A 400 HP turbo while very nice is not in my future.
58mm TB and an old 90 degree Ford oil cooler are in hand
Upper and lower intakes have been ported - they were really restricted
Blue G10 is here to make the plenum spacers today
Stock cam will be retained - fuel economy
Heads are off and need ported
Free floating rocker spacers need made
High ratio vs. stock rockers

Cap, Rotor, 8mm wires, coil, all sensors, filters, 180 deg thrmo, headers, and muffler are on order
I have no idea what to expect from this performance wise. It will be what it is and way less $ than buying a new vehicle.
My wallet is way happy that the interior and body are in excellant shape.
