I have a 1992 2.9 L extended cab 4x4 in very good shape. Problem is the 2.9 L has no compression on one cylinder and half the rated compression on another cylinder with both of those cylinders in the same bank. The truck exhibits loss of power going up hills and when pulling loads. I love this truck but have heard the 2.9 L is unreliable in the area of the heads cracking consistantly. I want this truck to be a good runner and am considering dropping in a 4.0 L. First, should I convert? Second, is there a lot involved in this conversion and is there a good source in helping me accomplish this in a step by step instruction format?

it would be cheaper to just fix the 2.9L depending on the issue. If its just new heads you need it will be easier and cheaper than a 4.0 swap. You cna get NEW cylinder heads that woulnt crack

the second gen ranger is the easiest 4.0 swap canidate.

if you can find a good running donor truck then do the swap,it cost me about 500$ in all.if you have a stamped steel tranny pan then you need the 4.0 tranny too.

look in the engine conversion forum for build threads, and get EVTM's from ebay for each truck.

heres my swap-
