I have 1987 ford ranger 4x4. Been trying to fix this thing for a while when time allows. The plugs are firing off all the time with the key on, engine off. Truck will not. Cranks like it out of time.
Here are the things I have tryed.
Replaced plug wires, disturber cap and rotor, I swap all the relays on the passenger fender

When I got the truck it was missing the pcm, I took and put on out of a 89 or 90 bronco 2. I didn't know if that could cause my problem.
Looking to see if anyone has had this. Thanks for any help.

Your PCM swap will not cause this issue, nor will any of the other parts you have replaced. Stop throwing parts, start diagnosing.

I would start by unplugging the ignition module on the back of the distrubtor and see if it keeps firing off.

I unplugged the connector and the plugs quit firing. I cleaned the plug and the connector due to their being some corrosion on. Try plugging it back in and cranked it. Started for a couple seconds and died and started doing the something. I pulled the wire loom off to check the wiring on the back off the motor and looked good. Can that ignition module cause the problem or should look somewhere esle. Is their a way to check the ignition control module. Thanks

Autozone checked my 94 module for free.

The ignition module is my first suspect, since it is directly responsible for firing the coil, and they are a known issue with this engine.

Most parts stores can test it, although I have found their tests to not always be accurate.

After many years and more than a few times being stranded by that stupid TFI module I have taken to carrying a spare, along with the tool to replace it, in the vehicle at all times.

OK I went an got a ignition module off of a buddy engine an switched it with mine. And I getting the same results. Not sure where To look from here. Do these distbutor have the magnet style pick up in them.

Well think I'm going to do a 351w conversion so than I want to. Had a little electrical fire that burnrt some of the wiring harness. Opps
