2.9 HP and torque #'s

ok so i got to reading some stuff on the 2.9L to give it better profomance and was just wonder using regular gas what kind of HP and torque could you make with a 2.9 and how would this compair when matched up to a 4.0L doing the same kind of mods? just thinking of stuff i could do to my truck which is an 88.

my 88 has a full catback exhaust, CAI, 58mm TB, amsoil, and Base timing advanced to 12* and its a peppy little truck now. Only thing i have to compare it to is my buddies 4.0 ranger. 98 ext cab stepside. My B2 pulls on it from a stop all the way through 3rd but loses it in the bottom of 4th, approx 70mph range. I have 255/70/17's and 3.55 gears. 5spd.

His truck has similar sized tires, 3.73s, automatic transmission and the only comparable engine "mods" is the CAI and amsoil.

What I like about the 4.0 is 1500 RPMs or less on the trail it hangs on and chugs.My 2.9 didn't even fight it just died crawling on ruff ground with a manual.It does have weak power on top compared to the bottom in my opinion of coarse thats stock

power out of a 2.9 with mild mods running 87 octane would probably be somewhere around 140hp and 170# torque.

water are some # for the 4 liter? in reference to the 2.9?

4.0 ohv is 160hp and 230#
