i have the cats taken off of my 86 2.9, and i'm thinking of taking the muffler off, would that be bad for it?? i am thinking of just taking the muffler out and welding in a pipe so the exhaust still runs out to the back, just be louder. either that, or i have a "super Turbo" muffler that i picked up for $10, but idk if that would be too quiet??

Just leave it. My rule of thumb is unless it's a V8, you probably don't want to hear the exhaust. That said, I've heard a few decent setups behind a 4.0, and may try it myself, but the 2.9 is not a 4.0.

My 2.9 sounded pretty much the same as my 4.0...

Leave it alone, you aren't doing anything helpfull except making your truck retardedly loud. I've driven around with no cat or muffler and it was insane, I couldn't hit full throttle without hurting my ears.

well i disagree. i can hear the lifters knock more than the exhaust and i want something different. i'll probably weld the muffler on where it is now...

Really, I thought the 4.0 was a lot deeper? Ehh, whatever I probably won't do anything for a while, if at all.

Tad deeper and quieter, overall sounds the same.

I have an 86 Ranger with the 2.9L v6, and i sawzawed the cat off, then welded a 2ft 2-1/2 pipe in place of it, its long enough were when its idling, it sounds deep like a 4.0, and full throttle it actually made my neighbors car alarm go off...but i also dont have the piping that goes all the way back, only to about the end of the cab. im curious to what it sounds like sraight piped all the way back:icon_thumby:

I will admit, I liked loud exhuast up untill a while ago, when I "killed" my cats and had no muffler (ripped off, offroad) and it was WAY to loud for my liking. I ended up putting the cats off my parts Explorer on it after a week or two of straight pipes, Now it not only doesn't polute as much, but it actually sounds decent. Still louder than it could be, but it's not so loud you can't accelerate.

Food for thought, if you really NEED to get on the throttle, do you really want every cop in a 2 mile radius to hear you??

Or, what if you were trying to sleep (or had a baby or something that was trying to sleep) and somebody drove down the street with straight pipes, and woke you up?

Neither are good.
Just my opinion though, do as you like!

You want loud? I'll fire up my wifes 1975 F250. 360 FE engine, no converters (it came that way LOL) Directly into dual exhaust with glasspacks. I nailed it on the main street, and it sounded like a flippen jet engine. Also got me a few very harsh looks from the local PD.

nicely done....all you gotta ask yourself is, do I want my ranger to sound like rice?

Cutting off cats is illegal.
