Looking for a good 2.9 long block or complete 4.0 swap. Located in SF Bay area. Let me know what you have.

The 4.0 conversion is a hell of an upgrade from a 2.9... the hard part is finding the donor... I personally would shoot high for a 98+ ranger or explorer with the 4.0 OHV (obviously)
Copart is a good way to go IF they are there

Trust me when I say this. Keep the 2.9.

Turn your phone sideways, link to my build thread.

The 4.0 is not an upgrade. The 4.0 is a v6 that mimics a inline. Its similar to a jeep online, with the jeep having a slight advantage.

The 2.9 was a rally motor that launched both Westlake and TurboTechnics.

You do the math.

Everyone has their opinions ... 2.9’s are dated boat anchors. The 4.0 is a good motor hands down. I’ve personally beaten the hell out of mine and had 275k miles on it when I swapped it out for a 5.0. The 4.0 was still running when I pulled it and still sold it to someone wanting to rebuild it.
Long story short it depends on what you want to do, it’s harder to find a 2.9 than it is to find a 4.0.

How is the 2.9 a dated boat anchor but the 4.0 isnt?

When the OHV 4.0 is just a bored and stroked 2.9 and with the exception of OBD II the same tech?

EDIT-
Oh i forgot the 4.0 has EDIS instead of a distributor. So i guess that makes it a superior powerplant of the future.

Only reason I said 4.0 swap is because I'm missing the entire engine assembly. If I don't find a direct bolt in engine then I will probably be selling the truck. It's a good looker but I'm too busy to do my 347 swap.

Don’t listen to Rusty or PJ412...
Here’s the 2.9l vs 4.0l truth (not the 2.9l mafia biased story).
The 2.9l isn’t a bad motor. If your truck has a good running one in it, don’t waste your time on swapping in a 4.0l.
If your truck has a non running 2.9l in it, try to find a 4.0l truck to swap it. You can usually find a good running 4.0l truck for cheap.
Since your truck has no motor, the choice is yours... but why handicap yourself with the smaller, weaker, less reliable, engine that gets about the same mileage.

Yep. That's what I figured. Honestly I don't want another truck to part out. I work on other people's junk all day long and I want to minimize the time I put into getting it running. I originally bought it to put my 347 in it, but now I'm like eh. Don't want to deal with clearance issues etc. The 347 is in my crown Vic currently and it's a retarded engine for that car.
