going to be doing a 4.0 swap on a 90 b2. father stuck a brand new clutch and pressure plate on the 2.9...how well do you think it will do with the 4.0. and yes i will be useing the fm146

I see a big smokey cloud in your future.
The 2.9L clutch often has trouble sustaining the 2.9's torque, let alone a 4.0L.

It would be to your advantage and time saving to change the transmission and the clutch when you do the swap.

has any one put the fm146 behind the 4.0.....will it really go comblewy

Yes I will go boom.

The FM-146 doesn't hold up well behind the 2.9 and it has about half the torque of the 4.0.

theres a few people on here who have had a fm 146 behind the 4L and it was fine, now if it was the fm 145 id be concerned

the trick is use a 4L clutch with the fm146, and keep the abuse mild to medium and u should get some life out of it

That's when the problems generally would occur (shoving 220ft-lbs of torque through the FM146's 5th gear for a sustained period such as when going up a grade is likely to do far more damage to it than anything else).

Like others have said, you may get away with it for some time, but I'd definitely be looking for a M5OD to put in there in the meantime.
