Anyone know if there is a difference between the 2.9 and a 4.0 M50 4X4 mainshaft? I am thinking of converting my 4.0 2wd trans to a 4wd trans. The M50 I have in my old truck is newly rebuilt and would hate to have to buy a 4.0 4wd trans if I don't have to.

Would the mainshafts interchange?

Thanks

I looked into this a few years ago and cant find the thread for it. It might have been on a different site.

From what I am finding, I think they are the same.

You can convert a 2WD M5OD to a 4WD version by swapping the output shaft and extension housing. It's a big job though (complete teardown is needed).

Is it a 2.9L 4WD M5OD you have? That'll bolt right up to your 4.0L. I'd use it as it is (unless it's like trashed or something).

Those trannys aren't real common, and sometimes are sought-after for their lower gear ratios since they bolt directly up to a 4.0L.

the transmission is acctually a 2.3 that was converted to 4wd using parts out of a 2.9

the 93 ranger i just bought has some bearing chatter and will just take parts from the other transmission since it was rebuilt last year.

I just want to make sure it will work before i tear into it.

There are minor differences that most people won't pick up on and will make the whole thing not work if you don't do it right. The best bet to make sure it's done right is the swap EVERYTHING from the 2.3 case to the 4.0 case.

That would make since. That was what I was thinking of doing but just wasnt sure. That way I would have a lower gear ratios...

Thanks for the help
