I have a 1975 Pinto Wagon with a 2.8 V6. What I want to do is replace the C4 auto with a 5 speed manual transmission. Can someone help with what type and year Ranger 5 speed will fit the 2.8 V6 Pinto. I've been told that any Ranger from 1985 thru 1987 will swap out fine. Any of you fellows that know for sure I'd appreciate any help and numbers. Thanks in advance this is my 1st post, new guy here. I have own quite a few Rangers from 1984 up to my newest one a 2010 Ranger.

No, not any transmission will fit. First, 2wd and 4wd transmissions are different. So, you're gonna need a trans out of a 2wd truck. Second, the only engines that have the same bellhousing bolt pattern as the 2.8 is the 2.9 and 4.0. Other engines have different patterns. The most desirable trans is the M5OD, available in 1990-present trucks. for more info, check this out: http://www.therangerstation.com/tech_library/ManualTransmission.html

in that application, there is no advantage in using
a mazda over a tk5 from an older ranger.
the shifter will be right in the dash tho.

If that is a C4 trans (and not a C3), the 2.8 bellhousing might be worth something to someone that is tired of changing A4LD's in their RBV.

worth a look

might want to look up the mustang II guys, got a pinto wag and sedan also with the 2.8, but putting the a4ld in them, done some turbo pintos with the T5 , I remember when I use to work for ford in the mid 70s changed out a few clutchs on the 2.8 mustang twos, maybe the bell housing might mate up the the T5,never could figure out why they never put a four speed with the 2.8 pinto, and the reason for the huge 90 amp alt on just the V6 pintos, later :icon_thumby:

That C4 bell housing will also work with a C5 trans which is a much tougher version of the C4. The C5 was offered in several 4X4 Ranger pickups in the early 80s. That C5 trans is not built as tough as one originaly installed behind a 300-6 and the 302 V8 although it can be brought up to the heavier duty level when being rebuilt. The C5 came with a convertor that was supposed to "lockup" but almost always failed to do so and rebuilt convertors are not made in the "lockup" configuation. . Ford used the C5 for I believe 5 years from 1982 until 1986. One can install the C4 valve body into a C5 and all of the good apply pistons used in the performance built C4.
Theres a man here who has a late model Mustang with a 460 stroker motor in it with a built C5 transmission. The swap is possible because Ford used the C4 behind a few cars with the 351M engine which is the same pattern bell housing as the 429/460.
If that is a C4 trans (and not a C3), the 2.8 bellhousing might be worth something to someone that is tired of changing A4LD's in their RBV.
