2.8 transmission help

Hey I have 84 2.8 ranger 2wd with an automatic transmission. I read the tech library but I'm still not sure. What manual transmission would bolt in? I need to know. So I could find a donor truck.

hi, I pulled a 2.8 out of my 83 that is sitting on the shop floor. It has a 4 speed over drive, (5 speed) later today when i get home from work I can take a look at it to see if I can get a part number from it for you.

hi, sorry for not checking last night, i will get it tonight for you.

on the side of the trans a sticker shows.... E47A EA tried to reference the numbers, not to sure what to say. the pan has 14 bolts 4 on the front and back with 3 between the top corners. hope this can help some what. if i can give more let me know.

also was D09871 if that means anything

In 1983 it would be a toyo kogyo 5 speed, TK5 not to be confused with T5
It also came in 4-speed

E4 = 1984
7A = Ranger
That's what E47A numbers mean

Must have been a late model 1983 Ranger

2.8l engine can use a manual transmission from a 2.8l of course, but also from a 2.9l or 4.0l Ranger engine, all 3 had same bell housing pattern.

Yes, M5OD-R1 transmission from a 4.0l, and a 2WD of course, also 1997 or earlier so it will have speedometer cable hook up

4.0l engine only ever had the M5OD-R1, later models had M5OD-R1HD, but same basic transmission, they added an extra bellhousing hole and changed shifter a bit, but that was 2001 and up and won't have speedometer cable hook up

Not only that it is ideal. In addition to being the strongest/best it is also the newest and used for longest period of time.

This might help you some, they are swapping from the older trans to the M5OD but a lot of it would apply to you too. You are going to need the pedals and stuff too.
