I have an 84 ranger with a 2.8 and a 5-speed manual. I have considered pulling it and rebuilding but I may get swap it. Which would be more cost effective?

My other questions are will the 4.0 bolt to my current tranny, and will the stock radiator work or will I need one to fit the 4.0?

If you can find a cheap donor vehicle like an explorer with a bad tranny or something it would be pretty straight forward. The trans will bolt right in, and should be able to take the abuse of the 4.0L if its a TK5? You will need the wiring and computer from the donor and you will need to get an inline fuel pump to get the high pressure you need for FI. Putting the motor in should be straight forward, but the fuel and wiring are whats gonna take some time and patients. I am currently looking to do the same thing, or a 351w swap.

Oh and you will need the radiator from a 4.0L, which you could just grab off the donor rig.

the inline fuel pumps have been know to cause the lines to collapse from high pressures, if you have a donor vehicle id rob the tank and in tank pump and fit it under the trk if possible.

Not if you have the right lines to handle the high pressure. Yes that could happen if you leave the stock lines for the carb. I would try and find a similar ranger of a newer year with the 4.0L in it so you could just swap the tanks and lines that way they would fit right in place.

i used my 2.8 tank with the 4.0 pump in the tank and the inline pump and i got the fuel lines out of a ranger with fuel injection and used thoughs fuel lines u have u drill a hole for the pass side mount buts its cake and the wireing very easy the rad will bolt in with no mod
