hello, my 85 ranger 2x4 with a 2.8 is running good, but the 5 speed transmission took a holiday. a friend has a 5 speed from a 91 explorer 4.0 2 wheel. will this transmission physically bolt to and work with my 2.8? what clutch and flywheel should i use? thanks alot, matt

hello, does anyone here know if i can bolt a 4.0 5 speed transmission to an older 2.8 ranger engine and have it work properly? any help would be appreciated. what flywheel and clutch would i use? thanks, matt

Absolutely, it will bolt right up. Use the 4.0 flywheel and clutch. I'm not sure on mating the 4.0 slave cylinder to your current master, though. Somebody else can take care of that.

His current master will work with an '88-92 Aluminum slave cylinder,
but he'll need to replace the clutch line with one also from an '88-92.

awesome, thanks guys. i assume then that the 4.0 is balanced the same as the 2.8 is why i should use the 4.0 flywheel?

You can use either clutch as far as I know, but the 4.0 version is much larger.

woah your saying a 4.0 5 Spd will bolt up to my 2.8 ranger that curently has a 4spd with no third member modifications or driveline mods??

you might have to shorten or lengthen the driveshaft, yes. but i am glad to hear it will physically bolt to the engine. only thing i need to know now is if the flywheel is balanced the same between the 2.8 and 4.0?

I don't really know bro, & apparently noone else does either considering noone has replied.

If I knew I would tell you. Guess the best suggestion would be to pull your trans. out & compare the two & go from there....then once you know for sure you will be able to answer the question if it's asked by someone else & it won't go unanswered like yours has.

Good luck bro!!!:icon_thumby: Sorry I couldn't help you out.:icon_confused:

Im not positive but from what I have read it wont bolt up. Different pattern. I believe 4.0 is compatible with the 2.9.

The 2.8 is also from the same family of engines & the bell housing bolt pattern is the same.

I stand corrected. Thank you TEE REV.Its right there in the tec library sure enough.
