2.8 mystery

1 1/2 turns is the starting point, there isn't a spec measured in turns. With the engine idling warm, slowly turn one screw out until the rpms or vacuum are at their highest point, repeat on the opposite side. Recheck both screws by turning them in and out slightly to get the leanest, best idle. If you have the screws 3 1/2 turns out your jets are too small. 18 mpg is not impressive, I averaged 16mpg all summer with the 351 4 Just bolting a plate on in place of the EGR valve doesn't mean the spacer isn't corroded through. Remove the carb, remove the spacer from the manifold and inspect the underside. We used to replace a bunch of them for corrosion, it got to the point where Ford released cast iron replacements for the aluminum spacers on V8's.
I realize 1.5 turns is a starting point but he was suggesting 3.5 as a starting point. Thats way to much.

Gonna throw this out there since you mentioned compression test and harbor freight tester, the threaded adapters won't fit down in far enough to thread into the spark plug threads. I found this out recently, going to make my own adapter. I tried using the rubber nozzle and didn't have much luck with that method, probably possible with a helper to hold it in place while turning the engine.

Where did this land? Last post had it right. Warm motor. Out 1.5 turns. If it starts and runs, turn it out until it stumbles and then turn it in until it stumbles then back it off another 1/4 turn. Seems to work every time.

Work has kept me out of the garage. Finally getting to this now.
You just saved me 20 bucks ranger1911, thank you. Which ones fit?
Need to order another rocker cover gasket before I adjust the valves, chances it'd be alright reusing cork gaskets?
