Hey all,
I have a '74 Capri budget race car and we just spun a bearing on our 2.8 V6 motor. Looking at swapping in a 4.0 as they are cheap and plentiful, but I would like to retain the carb and mechanical distributor I have from the 2.8. I can't seem to find any pictures of the 4.0 intake. I know the exhaust manifolds are different but can anyone tell me if my 2.8 intake manifold will bolt on to the 4.0 motor. Ditto for the distributor. And if the intake won't fit can I put my heads and rocker assembly from the 2.8 onto the 4.0?

Any advice appreciated.

Reason I want to stay with a carb and mechanical dizzy is simplicity. My race car is an endurance racer running long events and we have a strict budget. It is already set up for a carburetted motor. I don't want to have to replumb the fuel lines and gas tank to accommodate a high pressure EFI setup. If a computer fries or something goes wrong with a sensor it can take a long time to diagnose and fix. If a it starts running bad with a carb and dizzy its easy to trouble shoot and fix at the track. Keep it stupid simple. Don't get me wrong I'm a big fan of efi, and if this was a street car or a high budget racer where I could bring a spare everything I'd go efi, but for this racing series the less technology the better.

Also mainly just wanted to know if the 2.8 stuff would swap over or not so I can decide whether to hunt down a 4.0 or go for another 2.8. Sounds like not on the distributor front.

I'll reply to my own thread in case anyone does any future digging in the archives on this topic.
Manifold from the early 2.8 does not swap over to the 4.0 or 2.9. The intake runners do not line up. There are people selling carb manifolds for the 4.0 but they are pricey.
All 4.0 blocks have a provision for a distributor but actually getting one to work with the motor seems to entail a large amount of work. In short if you want to stay carb and dizzy like me you need to stick with a 2.8 block or spend lots of cash and money on the conversion.

2.9's use a Dizzy from the factory. :icon_thumby:

a distributor from a 2.9 V6 fits straight in,
I also made an inlet for a Holley on a 4.0 myself and it is working fine.

Almost nothing from a 2.8 you can use on a 4.0
Only the same ARP conrod bolts....
