iam installing a low milage used engine in my b-2. before i install it iam replacing all the gaskets. now that the oil pan is off is a hv oil pump worth the $75 bucks or is it a waste of $. i had a hv oil pump in a race car i had with a 2.3 ford engine in it. i finally had to drill out the distributor drive gear roll pin hole, modifiy a grade 8 allen head bolt, and install it as to not shear the gear pin. has any 2.8 hv pump users had a problem like that.

The only use for a hv pump is when the engine is turning high revs and is clearanced more than our stock ones are.
All you will get is more hp used to drive that pump.

My dad and I are both using hv oil pumps from autozone, only costed $40 and gives 28% more volume. I could tell a difference with my engine before and after, runs a bit smoother IMO. We didn't have to mod. anything either, just bolted right in.

I'm all for extending the life of my engine, not worried about a slght hp drop turning it. If I need more power, I'll drop in a larger engine and ofc, put a hv pump on it too.

In any case, I would replace the oil pump in any engine before installing it into any vehicle, its just cheap insurance.

Howdy DR
The ONLY use for a hv pump is if the standard pump shows LOW pressure due to enlarged clearances. Other words would be the engine is internally LEAKING more oil than the standard pump can keep up with. That EXTRA capability does cost hp to an extent. If the engine in question can hold pressure with the standard pump then the HV one is USELESS! It isn't pushing any more oil than the clearances will allow..
As for installing a new pump... these pumps are as dependable as most if not all other parts of our engines.

But my engine is 26 years old and not rebuilt. My dads is rebuilt. But what this does is saves us having to change out the oil pumps when the clearances to get larger. So in the end, its a win situation.

I would do it, my engine has very low pressure at idle, even then the light does not come on. I found this when I added gauges.

Same here. Remember, this is a high volume pump, not a high pressure pump.
