2.8 ? for the smart folks

84 BII Wont start. Was running fine yesterday then this morning nothing. Battery good. Question is, what engages the solenoid? I checked the starter relay and it looks ok. I have haynes and chilton but they suck for this issue. Neither one even has a fuse box diagram.

When the relay powers the starter, it turns and also moves an internal pole shoe, which engages the starter gear to the flywheel.

Got lights or other electrical items? If not, look at the battery cables first. Bad cables are the root of most starting evils. Good luck.

favourite problem is the ground connector on the block.

You can clamp on the jumper cables as another ground cable, and it should start.

Check this out. Father in law was over and was convinced it was the solenoid. To keep him happy I changed it still no start. He leaves so I put original one back on and the f@#$%^ started. I agree with the ground theory.If I had to use jumpers for an additional ground where would i connect them?

One end of the jumper cable to the battery's Negative post, the other end to the engine block. Just gotta love father in law's telling you how to do things, huh? Good luck with it; I think you're on the right track.

FWIW, if you never even touched a ground, but it started once you juggled around with solenoids, you might take a close look at the positive battery terminal. Also make sure you have a clean connection from the small trigger wire for the solenoid. I've had no starts from caused by both.

tfi on the back of the distributor or the coil pack.. is it getting spark? there famous for going... my dad used to keep spares for both his 2.8s good thing we kept the extra parts.. just picked up an 85 b2 yesterday.

Didnt touch the ground just the positive terminal. Love the father in law to death but he has terminal cancer and cant remember shit. He is a life long mech and xmission geniouse but now cant remember how to tie his shoes. I humor him when he is well enough to get out. Im sure the problem is simple I just gotta find it before it leaves me stranded. Im gunna carry my jumpers for now. thx 4 helpin guys.Beer thirty

Next time it 'no cranks' on you? If it's an automatic? Try it in 'N'. If it's a standard? Hit the clutch pedal a few more times. Could be a neutral safety switch starting to act up.

thanks robbie, it wont be long, and I just took my father off support for the same thing last june. worst thing, my father in law wanted a heep so i had to build him one. this is a great truck and i wanna keep it runnin till my son is ready to take it

If anyone has had a simular problem did it start if you tried to catch it in gear?
