I know they swap physically, but I dont have one for the 2.8 to see if they are indenticle. Anyone have a picture of one for a 2.8 or know if they are the same? If there is any question about what i mean for timing sight, I mean the little sight hole you look in when setting your timing with timing light on the crank pully.

Not sure if they're interchange able, but I always watched the flat edge of the timing pointer, and not the hole. I've verified that was right, when I had my engine apart, I looked to see how far off the T/C mark was when the piston was actually at TDC and it was pretty damn close.

Here's the flat edge I am referring to:

you're right, I forgot about the edge. Its been quite awhile since I set the timing. Is that a 2.8 or 2.9?

LOL, just a reminder :), might run a little funky timing it there.. :icon_twisted:

It's a 2.9L.

Wait, on a 2.8 are we suppose to use the hole or the pointer. Cant remember if the 2.8 has both.

so are they the same?

You use the pointer. I have no idea what that hole is for, but the engine won't run if you try to set timing there.

Looks like the same as what's on my 2.8 to me.

Oh and Amsoil FTW! :D

what damper marks do you use on the 2.8 ?? Its not marked from the factory.

It is marked but it's really hard to see. It's not a big trench carved in the balancer like on a SBC. These have a half dozen or so scribe marks on only the rear section of the pulley. You'll probably have to wire brush the pulley to see them.

No what I mean by them not being marked is there are no numerical markings. None. So what are the readings you use?

They are there you need to get under the truck and get close enough to see them and use a white crayon or marker to mark 10 degrees it is one mark before the number 12 you will see it when you get close. the groove is near 0 dbtdc or tdc

Just the FYI: The hole is actually there for (if memory serves...) a special factory used timing adjustment system from the factory/engine plant. The probe would push into the hole, and there is something about it that uses a magnetic pickup. The rest of us in the field get to use the pointer. If the marks are hard to read....PB blast it slightly and rub it down a touch. The marks are there, just at times darn near impossible to read. I marked the setting using a paint pen, and aligned it with the pointer.

OK more info you. I have had the engine apart. I built it two winters ago. I had the balancer off and detailed. There's no rust or grime, none. I know of the marks, just no degree associated with them.

You could have said that in the first place it would have saved us all some trouble. :D

The first mark is zero and they go in two degree increments up to 12. Advancing timing means moving in the same direction that the crankshaft spins so the spark occurs further before top dead center. Retarding goes the opposite direction so spark occurs closer to TDC.

2.8 Set at 10° BTDC
Remember to unplug the advance wire if you have the EECIV electronics still.
