I have a 98 ranger with 2.5L and 145,000 miles on it. The motor runs great and doesn't use any oil. When I start it there is a loud ticking sound. It almost sounds like an old diesel. It seems to go away after it gets warmed up though, which makes me think its in the head. I was told its common for these motors to have a ticking noise. Does anyone know what this tick is from. wondering if I should bother fixing it.

Lifters? Sometimes they stick. I have heard that you can fix them by running sea foam in your oil a couple hundred miles before an oil change, or use ATF the same way...like replace a quart of oil with ATF. Not sure if either works, just what I've heard. Ask around to see if this will work or not.

Seafoam and Marvel are both good stuff. Either of those should help or even eliminate the problem. I personally favor Marvel a bit.

Next oil change, run a part-synthetic oil. And maybe let the engine open up every once in a while when getting on the interstate.

Mine will tick if I haven't started it for days. Just the oil drained in the pan. It will also do it when fully warmed up and idling, but you gotta listen for it. A 10w-30 weight oil help too.

What worked for ME!!

I had a prominent TICKING in my current truck when it rolled over 200,000 miles last year so I decided to start using 1 quart of Lucas heavy duty oil stabilizer and for the rest of the oil I started using Castrol 5w-30 high mileage and my ticking has STOPPED, it took about 200 miles and shazammmmmmm no more ticking.

My wife's 1997 Taurus starting have a ticking at 180,000 miles and since it called for the EXACT same specs for oil I also did the exact same thing for her car and her ticking stopped almost immediately.

This has been my PERSONAL experience and yours and others might be different!

Be prepared for the people who support it and also the Nay-Sayers who say things like ( OMG DON'T EVEN TRY IT ) and of course the people who will say ( JUST FIX THE PROBLEM, MECHANICALLY ) People will either love a product or hate it, etc etc etc so on and so forth. Just remember OPINIONS are like assholes everybody has one!!:icon_thumby:

Keep in mind there are literally THOUSANDS and THOUSANDS of people using Lucas oil for old tired engines with great results.

Make sure to use the right weight of oil recommended for your particular year ranger.

I also use this particular OIL FILTER ( Fram Tough Guard ) for help with ENGINE START UP!! ( protects your engine by retaining oil when engine is off so your engine benefits from a full Filter at start-up)

I use Motorcraft oil filter and full synthetic Royal Purple 5w-30 for my engine. Also change it every 5k miles or once a year. I don't drive much a year.

Yes, opinions are like *ssh*l*s. Some people have more than one.
