Hello All,

I've got a 2000 Ranger 2wd with the 2.5L in it. I've had the truck for about 2 months now and noticed the truck ran a little rough so I changed the plugs and plug wires about 3 days ago after noticing they were factory. Truck ran better and idled smoother. Last night after school drove a friend home who lives about 1hr N. of me and was cooking along trying to get back home. After getting off the Interstate and coming to a light the truck Idled really rough and I got the check engine light. Took it to Advanced today and had them read the code and it came up with Misfire Cyl #2 and O2 sensor. Any suggestions?

Nate

Check to see if the plug wire popped loose, they will if air is trapped in between the rubber boot and plug, then expands as the engine heats up and pushs it back off, use dielectic grease in the boot to prevent this

Check the boot and re attached it no change. Unhooked the wire from the plug and it ran the same. I'm thinking its the coil pack. Any way to test that?

Nate

Went to swap the coils and see if I had a bad primary when the male end of the connection on the secondary cracked. So today I bought two new coil packs and put them on. Still no change. Gonna try a cam positioning sensor tomorrow.

Well did some research and there is now Cam positioning sensor and it threw no code for a Crank Positioning sensor. Since I've been doing this all in my apartment parking lot I gave up and made an appointment with Ford. Took it in today and #2 is only 75% compression that it should be. Probably a Valve or valve spring. Ill know all the details on Monday.

Nate

rule #1 about working on cars dont throw parts at it, cuz itll cost more in the end, my 1st thought is if O2 sensor cuz its cheap mand ez, dont trust anything that dealer says cuz they want 2 thing ur money and ur money, they will either tell u its one thing and its something stupily simple like and 02 sensor unless u saw them do the compression test and u saw the numbers would be the only way i would trust them, also when they see u come in because u need work on ur truck they will try and either sell u a bunch of shit u dont need or try selling a new that u dont need

Old thread figure I'd tie up the end of it. Ended up being a crack between the valves, apparently common for this motor. No money was wasted as all the parts changed were in need of being changed (factory plugs and plug wires with 100k+ miles) or were broken (coil pack connector broke). Dealer treated me really well and gave me a 2014 f150 lariat to drive for 2 weeks free of charge
