My credo
if it cant hang it cant stay
I have a 99 xlt that had the 2.5 in it it has ben replaced with the 3.0 the motor will only run off of starting fluid ive checked all wires injectors and fuel everything is good im stumped do I need to change fuel pumps are is there a trick im missing

Same fuel pump for all rangers of that year

Ford computers run the fuel pump for 2 seconds when key is first turned on, listen if you can hear the fuel pump come on, you can turn the key off and then on several times and listen.
The fuel pump is not quiet, unless there is a train or ambulance with siren on passing by you will hear it :)

If no sound then check the fuel pump fuse in the Power Box(engine compartment)
In the Power Box you will also find the Fuel Pump relay pull it out and make sure connector look good.
At this point you will need a volt meter(or test light) to test for power

If you hear the pump:
On the injector Fuel Rail there is a schrader valve(looks like the air valve on a tire), stand off to the side and press in the center pin, there is 60+psi of pressure in there, so it will spray a ways, watch out.

What year is the 3.0l?
In '98 ford changed from 45psi to 65psi fuel system, so injectors changed and there was no return line to the tank

The 3.0 is 99 also came out of a mazda b 3000 I discoverd my battery was only at 9 volts I am on my way to the parts house to grab a charger

did you hook up the pats system?

What is the pats????? Im gettin fuel to injectors just wont run with out starting fluid

Ok so in a nut shell this is whats done to tge truck unbolt old motor and trans removed with ecm and complete harness new motor pluss harness put in and ecm. I didnt touch the pats I have a few vaccume line im not to sure on could that cause my no start the two top coolent lines atop the intake broke off currently not hooked up the brake booster vaccume broke have a plug in it to keep my vaccume and I think the rest of vaccume are hooked correct

there is a module behind the pass side airbag. your 4cyl truck doesn't have pats but the 3.0 truck should have had it

Shit I read the article sooo how do I install this pats stuff

You don't, IMO you would be better off getting a computer(ECM or PCM) from a '98 3.0l(non-Flex Fuel) with matching transmission.
'99 was the first year of Ranger getting PATS, and it would have PATS type B with separate PATS module above the glove box.

VEHICLES WITH PATS TYPE A, B, OR C SEND AN ENABLE MESSAGE TO THE PCM IF THE PROPER CONDITIONS ARE MET. THE PCM THEN ALLOWS FUEL INJECTOR AND FUEL PUMP OPERATION. THE PROPER CONDITIONS ARE: 1) A VALID KEY READ FOR PATS TYPES A, B, AND C, AND 2) PROPER PATS-PCM INITIALIZATION FOR PATS TYPES B AND C. REFER TO CHART FOR DETAILS ON THE REQUIRED INITIALIZATION.

SOME VEHICLES WITH PATS TYPE B OR C MAY INCLUDE A STARTER INTERRUPT (SI). THESE VEHICLES DO NOT NECESSARILY HAVE TO EXHIBIT A NO CRANK SITUATION TO CONSTITUTE A PATS RELATED NO START.

To add the PATS you need the module above the glove box and the loop around the key switch that reads the PATS key, and you also need the PATS key from that 3.0l vehicle and key cylinder so key will work on new vehicle................
Also anti-theft light on dash, not sure 2.5l has that or not

IMO, non-PATS computer would be better, but if you have the donor vehicle handy, and PATS keys for it, swapping the PATS equipment would be free

Reason for '98 PCM is because it will have the higher fuel pressure software, if it is different, I think '95-'97 had return fuel system, pre-'95 uses a different PCM altogether so won't connect to existing harness.
Non-Flex Fuel because truck won't have the fuel sensor so CEL would come on.
The PCM runs the automatic transmission if so equipped, and if you use an automatic trans PCM on a manual trans vehicle it will work but CEL will be on all the time, which some don't mind but if there ever was a 'real' reason for CEL coming on you wouldn't know it

Goin grab an 98 ecm when I get my intake manifold the 3.0 v6 98 ecm will work correct

Also I drive a manuel does the transmission matter?

yes otherwise you will have a check engine light because no sensor input from the transmission

Yes it will matter for new PCM.

You want:
'98 Ranger 3.0l(gas only, no FFV), MT(manual trans)

Not sure if the 1998 Mazda B3000 had the returnless fuel system

Do you have 2wd or 4x4?

Might be another wrinkle..............Ford changed the Cam Position Sensor(CPS) in '00, I think, different type of sensor and connector, so '98 PCM won't understand '00 CPS
You have a '99 3.0l so shouldn't be an issue, but............late '99 manufacture date, lol.
Hall Effect CPS has 3 wires, this was original sensor
Variable Reluctance CPS has 2 wires, this is what they changed to
Look at your current CPS and count the wires, if you see 3 then it will work with '98 PCM
