I've got a 1998 Ranger with the 2.5 and it's siezed and I'm wondering if I can swap it with a 2.3. The 2.5 is pretty much unavailable used in my area but I've got a 97 2.3 available. I'm a skilled mechanic, so the work is not any issue, I just don't know the ins and outs of those specific engines to know if I'd run into any issues with the swap. They hardly come through the shop anymore. Thanks for any info.

The only difference between a '97 2.3L and a '98 2.5L is the rotating assembly (pistons, rods and crank) and the engine program, it's a direct replacement(I don't know about the fuel injector sizes, the 2.5L could have bigger injectors). You would be best off grabbing the computer for the 2.3L but my guess is the 2.3L will run fine on the 2.5L computer...

Yes, other than a small HP difference the 2.3 will swap right in.

My previous Ranger went the other way and ran the 2.5 on the 1996 2.3 computer. I think the newer you get the closer to the 2.5 it will be. The 1997 was listed at 110 HP while the 1998 was 117.
