I got my truck back on the road but decided to park it until I get this figured out. It has been running poorly for over a year now. Symptoms include rough idle when stopped and often stalling when I put the clutch in at a red light. All the lights dim in relation to engine speed, so because the idle pulses, the lights do too. I would think that the dimming could be a bad alternator, but it’s brand new. The battery isn’t that old, but it has been dead a couple of times, once for more than a month while it sat. Plugs and plug wires are only a couple years old. Fuel filter is new. New O2 sensor (the upstream one I guess). I cleaned the MAF. I took out and shook the IAC and it rattled which I’ve read, means it’s fine. I think I can’t remember if I checked the EGR valve last fall but I think I did.
Does this sound like a vacuum leak? I’ve read of different ways to check like spraying starting fluid or carb cleaner on the hoses to see if the idle goes up. I haven’t been able to find a diagram showing where all the hoses are. My Haynes manual sucks sometimes. Could it be a bad fuel pump? After it sat for two months it wouldn’t start and I had a helluva time figuring that out, but one day it did start making me think that the battery was just really dead and needed to be charged up over night. I need to change (or have somebody change) the timing belt, but I don’t know if that would cause these problems. It used to throw a code (can’t remember which one, but “lean condition bank 1” I think) but the CEL is off now. This sucks.
Thanks for the help.
