My 2.5 liter, 1999 ranger would occasionly idle down low when it was idleing. this went on for several weeks. Then while driving home one day it would spit and spudder a couple of times and then would run fine for another 6 or 7 minutes and clear up. It has gotten worse. It will drive fine for 20 or so minutes and then when I come to a stop, give it gas and it hesitates and will occasionaly misfire/ back fire. But it doesn't do it all the time. I barely made it up a hill this morning but then cleared up for about 5 minutes and then did it again.
Took it to auto zone and it showed four diffrent discriptions under one code. #1 bank misfire; #1 bank low vacum; lean fuel; and internal engine problem as the fourth probabliity.
Checked the plug wires and had one burned wire where it connects to the spark plug and the passenger side. Fix that and didn't help. The problem is progressively getting worse. Can't find any vacum leaks.
I had a similiar problem a couple of months ago, not near this bad but I took it to the dealership and the code showed a VGR problem. The VGR test showed it was fine. After four hours and $75.00 I drove it home and the problem still presisted. Took it to Auto zone and it showed somethng wrong with cynder #1 misfire. Turned out to be a burned plugwire on that cylinder and the problem was fixed.
How do I narrow down where the problem is with numerous codes problems showing? I figure one problem is making it show multible codes. The problems don't arise until after driving it for about 20 minutes.
