i have a 98 ranger 2.5 and ive had a squeeling noise that comes on when the engine hits 3000rpm and stays on untill i hit 3000rpm again its weird but noise doesnt sound like a slipping noise its more like a grinding/dragging noise. i need help ive already taken of the belt and tested the pulleys and have replaced the idler but not the tensioner it seems to have smooth operation the only thing i can think of is the water pump my radiator is leaking so i have to fill up the overflow tank every week can to much water hurt the water pump?

Try taking the belt off and starting the motor briefly to see if it still does it. Then try spinning the pulleys by hand with the belt off to see if you hear any grinding on one of them. They should all be smooth spinning. Your water pump generally would start leaking if it were bad. I had to put a new belt on after I changed my idler and tensioner because the old one (which was only a month old) was ruined by the bad pulleys, and continued to make weird chirping noises after the new pulleys were installed. Hope this will help you.

What I do to track down a noise like that is make a mechanics stethascope with a piece of fuel line or garden hose hold it up to you're ear and then start moving the other end around the engine while its running and see if you can narrow it down to a certain component it works pretty good. On that note I had a noise like that and was pretty convinced it was an idler pulley so I didn't think anything of it..... One day the camshaft frozed up after spinning the front two bearings and broke. That was all she WROTE! So be sure and run that hose across the valve cover just incase!:icon_surprised:
