Ok i have a 1986 ranger 2.3l 4x4 and my problem is when i let it sit over night and go to start it in the morning it starts up but smokes and runs rough and the smoke smells like gas or burnt gas but after it warms up it smooths out and stops smoking. And while it is running rough the plugs are full of gas but when it smoothes out and stops smoking the plugs are clean. So am thinking a bad or leaky injector any ideas anyone?:icon_confused:

Weren't the 86's carbuereted? If so, might be time for a carb rebuild. If fuel injected, a leaky injector definitely could be a possibility. Find which plugs are damp prior to starting the engine to determine which could be culprits.

You might check to see if the pump is hot wired...meaning it is constantly on...if it is the original wiring it should be only on when the key is turned...otherwise someone has rewired the pump into an always hot wire...that way it will (should) shut itself off when the pressure is up, but if the gas is leaking through the injectors that will cause it to keep the pump running...

I doubt that that is the case, but might be worth checking where the pump wires are fed from...

Other than that...could well be that your injectors need to be replaced...and I'd suggest trying them one or two at a time...should only be four of them on your engine and replacing them should be an hour or so job...if you're not sure, have someone else do it if you can afford it...

i dont think it is hot wired i am the second owner and the pump comes on when the key is turned on and i bought some lucas injector cleaner and put that in and see if that does anything if not ill start replacing injectors by getting a good injector and testing the others.
