i have an 83 ranger 4x4with a 2.3l.threw the old motor in the trash. i rebuilt an engine and its not running very good i just wanted to see if you guys know af any problems with modifications i made or mods i still want to make. first thing i swaped out the old cam with 2.5l roller cam and followers i ground out the followeres to fit the bigger valve stems.83 mustang D port head mild polishing and i lapped the valves. put an intake on that has the adapter from two to one barrel im going to put either a motorcraft 2100 or a holley 2300 i have both but holley needs rebulit. but i am runing the electronic junk carter 1 bbl for right now. pinto mustang II patriot header. forged pistons 30 over, crower rods, balanced and blueprinted. HV melling oil pump. bought complete block from a former mini stocker on the cheap. still running stock ignittion dura spark II but i have all EGR lines disconnected whitch im wondering if that affects anything like the timing or Air Fuel ratio and when i went to time it and by ear it runs best at like 20 to 30 degrees BTDC so i cant time it and now its backfiring trough the carb and has a miss i just dont know where to start carb or ignition im not so good with the electronic bs so i want to completely eliminate it any info would be appreciated:icon_confused:

Backfire through the carb can be ignition timing or vac leak...since you are using the carb/dizzy you need to first set it to original timing with the dizzy vac line disconnected...8* BTDC...and test...if it starts but runs funny you can alter the dizzy timing to see if it improves...clockwise rotation is usually required initially on OEM timing...

If it fires then but doesn't run properly you may have a vacuum leak...like if it dies when you try to give it gas...make sure all intake vac lines are plugged then check for leaks around the carb...

Once you get the engine running with the dizzy disconnected just reconnect it and then try tweaking...

Could also be a few other things but start there...

what is the dizzy? i dont know what that is. im gonna put a two brrel on it soon but it defanately runs bad it im gonna mess with it and get it to run long enough to get it in to autoshop i think ill spray some carb clean around the bottom of the carb to see if it raises rpms. when i actualy started it for a little bit i thought i saw some raw fuel coming out by the bottom of the addapter plate. what about the distributer i have it plugged into constant vacume i thinkits supposed to be plugged to the carb some where above the butter fly i think thats why my timing is so off

Distributer
