i have a 1996 ranger 2.3 and want to know if the cam gear is round or squared im interested in an adjustable cam gear and want to know if it is worth it to install or if there is more that has to be changed then just the gear its self

I beleive 93 and newer are round, mine is a 94 and I know it is round.

nice thanks for the information i just wasnt sure...but i would like it if someone could back that up also
THANKS!!!

Just look through the little timing belt inspection hole and see if the belt has round teeth or square (more like trapazoid) shaped teeth. Or remove the top half of the cover, you will have to sooner or later anyways unless you want to take everything apart everytime you want to adjust it.

all ive found is a adjustable cam gear for the earlier models and i know that those have a roller cam and with it being a 96 with a hydralic cam im not sure if the cam gear will fit if someone could tell me this it would help a lot for me to get more ponies out of my motor
THANKS!!!!

You can get a round tooth gear and yes it will help

All Ranger 2.3s from 89 on have roller cams. If you just change the gear itself, you will neve know you did it powerwise.:)shady

Right...as in you may need to adjust up or down depending on what you want to get out of the engine...

I tried it on mine and for some strange reason I couldn't get it to idle properly...so I went back to base timing and it started right up and ran like a top...

what is the stock timing on it i read somewhere that it was retarded 8 degrees already so if i advanced the timing 6 degrees would it mean that the timing would be at 2 degrees retarded?

The timing gear adjustment doesn't actually change the stock timing...just the cam timing...where the valves open earlier or later on the combustion stroke...

This, in turn changes the power band either up or down so you can either have more lower end grunt or more top end...but you take away from one or the other in order to do this...so your horsepower does not change at all...

However, if you go with a cam with bigger lobes (racing cam) the valves can stay open for slightly longer duration allowing the chambers to draw in more fuel and give you more bang for your buck...but adding a racing cam should also involve bigger valves so the effect is to get more gas in through a bigger opening...and you can then get more horsepower AND change the power band while using the same stock timing...

I'm not familiar with the later model Rangers and timing issues but from what I've heard from a few others is that it is not easy to change the stock timing...and not needed for a cam timing adjustment that you would get out of one of these gears...
