2.3 Turbo and smog

Anyone know if it's smog legal to swap a 1988 thunderbird 2.3 turbo motor into a 1983 ranger?

From what I hear, as long as the engine year is the year of or newer then the vehicle it is going in.

depends on the state... here in CA it is not the motor would have to be out of the same vehicle family. as an examplei could swap a 4.0 into my 94 2.3 and it would be fine as long as it meets the smog reqs for the 4.0. and its a bit of paperwork to do that. what you might do if your in CA or if they have the same requirements in your state to just swap in the 2.3 with a different exhaust manifold and get it refereed that way then just bolt up your turbo after you pass smog.

iirc, engine had to be same year or newer, and had to have been used in that truck from factory, 2.3s were used in rangers so i dont see a problem. stupid smog laws, just sniff my tailpipe and say pass/fail demmit..

Here in ca the turbo would flag it as an automatic fail before the sniffer is even in the pipe

Down in south Texas they never check the only time they did a lady took a folded up napkin and it on the muffler for a few seconds then looked at it and nodded lol.

In Texas it depends on the county. In dfw you will have to get it sniffed but they don't care what engine is in the truck as long as it passes for whatever was stock.
