Im thinking on converting my 1996 ranger 2.3 with a 1999 3.0. what all would i have to change and would a 1997 4.0 trans fit the 1999 3.0?

IMHO a 3.0L conversion would be just a waste of time. It has about the same power as a 2.3L, but without the mileage. Nothing is interchangeable with the 3.0L, its an engine in its own class. Not many upgrades for the 3.0L...Unless your hellbent on the 3.0L or already have one, a much more wiser swap would be the 4.0L, way more power and torque for towing and hauling, way more upgrades available, and about the same if not more MPG's than the 3.0L...

I have to disagree... I pull off between 23 - 28 MPG highway with my 4x4 3.0L with the hubs locked in, and I can get around 18 - 20 in town. My moms 4.0L has trouble getting past 22 highway and like 16 in town (she also drives WAY more conservatively). And my truck is pretty darn peppy with 31's and 3.73's still.

I don't get why everyone hates the 3.0L...

As for changing the engine... you will need a complete donor vehicle with engine harness, engine, computer, transmission, and other odds and ends that will nickel and dime you if you don't have a complete donor vehicle.

I'm nto trying to discourage you, just giving my own opinion, and after driving all 3, (2.3L, 3.0L, and 4.0L) the 4.0L is my choice. The 3.0L just didn't have it to tow my trailer, my 2.3L actually did a better job than the 3.0L did...But back to your question, yes, you will need a complete donor vehicle, and if its a different year depending, you may need more than just the engine harness

I just put a 3.0 auto from a 93 into an 89 that had a 2.9 5sp that was completly shot (oil pump went) . I agree that you will need and entire donor truck for the wiring and computer. I even swapped dashes.

Best thing you could do is find a 95-97' 3L truck and grab everything out of the engine compartment. A rolled parts truck would be perfect for this swap.
