Alright, I'm new to the ranger forms. I have been looking around for a week or so trying to find a complete 2.3 to 4.0 swap thread... And I have found 20 that have been started but they didnt have the donor vehicel or anything. Thats where i'm different I have both the donor and the recipient.

So lets start off got a truck for my 16th birthday a beat little ranger put a new clutch in it and couldnt get it to bleed out. bought a new slave cylinder instaled that still nothing I was done with it.So the truck sat and sat for 2 years.

Then about 3 weeks ago I was going down the road and i saw the explorer on the side of the road with any good offer writen on the windsheild. It had a new clutch, slave, and master sound firmiliar? same problem as my ranger I gave the guy 200 bucks and towed it home. But my dads friend i have no clue what he did but he got it bleed. It has another problem no title, was lost when he moved dmv wants 200 bucks for a new one ha! Now i'm hear with a running explorer and a beat little ranger then i thougth about doing the swap.

My donor is a 93 4.0 explorer sport, 5 speed, 2wd, and 3.73LS 8.8 rear.

and my ranger 94 rcsb 2.3, 5 speed, 2wd, and 3.45 rear.

I'd like to know what else ill need to get or if i have everything i need?

Ill post pics when i get off work tonight. thanks in advance

You are going to need a 1993 RANGER engine bay harness, because things are located differently in the engine bay.

I'm not going to say that doing it without a Ranger engine bay harness is impossible.

I will say that doing it without it will make the job ~20 times more difficult than it would be with it.

Now, you can run the 4x4 trans in your 2wd truck but you'll need to leave the T-case attached and get a rear driveshaft for a 4x4 ranger (one the same WB as yours)

You could also dismantle the trans and convert it to the 2wd configuiration
(this requires COMPLETE disassembly of the trans)

Converting to 4x4? that would require cutting the engine crossmember out of both trucks and welding it into yours.

I need a ranger 4.0 OBD 1 harness? Or could I just extend this harness?

Would it be easier to use a ranger that has teh same front end as the explorer? (got one in my yard with a blown trans) its a 90.

And both of my vehicles are 2wd, i'm not crazy enough to attempt the 4x4swap either.

It's not a matter of extending the harness...

The Engine bay harness and on engine harnesses are completely different because of different engine bay layout.

the engine bay harness and power distribution harnesses are "all one piece" on both the 1993-94 Ranger and the 1993 Explorer.

a 1994 Ranger harness would work provided you get one for a NON-EGR 4.0

It's not about "possible/impossible"

It all about "it's a damned big job and why add to your misery?"

In detail
1)Computer location
the computer in the explorer lives inside the passenger side kick panel
The computer in the ranger is mounted through the firewall outboard of the brake and clutch master cylinders (and is most accessable by inscrewing the drivers side inner fender

the batteries are mounted on opposite sides of the engnie bay

The power distribution boxes are likewise on opposite sides

And because of the differences in the engine bay harness the on-engine harness is very nearly mirror image.

Trust me on this when converting from one engine to another don't fight battles you can avoid

I have a 1993 3.0 5sp 4x4 supercab sitting in my yard and I'm going to
convert it to a 4.0.

Now
I could spend weeks converting the exsisting Ranger harness from the 3.0 to fit a 4.0
OR
I could spend weeks converting a 4.0 explorer harness to fit the Ranger
OR (my personal pick)
I could go to the junkyard and grab a complete CORRECT harness that I can
swap in in about three hours

what route would you choose to follow?

would it really matter if I had the intention of swaping the whole harness Engine bay, interior and electronics? been their done that with another truck. And would the ranger harness keep me from having to go threw the interior?

also what do i need about motor mounts any cutting or redrilling?
