I have a 93 ranger 2.3, and no frickin joke it shoots flames. it has a gutted cat and a flowmaster exhuast that dumps out before the passenger tire. The truck gets really good gas milage still. Im just curious why it shoots flames. Is it just the fact that the cat is gutted? Thanks

yea i figured so, sorry for such a stupid question but how would i fix it? i can easly get a 12 inch flame out of the exhuast LOL

Pick up a book and it will tell you what the baseline settings are for the carb. Or just back out the mixture screw 1/2 turn to start. It's just running fat.

You might want to pull a plug also to check. If it's black, then it's rich. If it's a tan color then you have other issues and we'll figure it out then.

carbs were long gone by 1993.

perform a KOER self test (check the tech library) and see if you get any rich O2 codes. i wouldnt be surprised if your timing belt was off a tooth.

Is your smog pump still working and drive belt on? If so, there's your problem. I bet it does it when you let off the gas right?

when you figure out why you have this problem, let me know so i can recreate it and have my truck doin that. i think that would be bombin

and irresponsable and dangerous and idiotic and illegal and bad for your engine.

no smog pumps in '93 either.

just go to your local exhaust shop and have them install a spark arrestor. kind of looks like a glass pack with blunt ends instead of tapered.

a spark arrestor is exactly what the name emplies, a SPARK arrestor. it wont help a flame shooting from the exhaust.

and installing an aftermarket component to cover up a problem isnt fixing it, its covering it up. it should be in his best interest to fix the problem correctly before he causes major damage to something.
