2.3 Performance Upgrades

What are some good performance upgrades for an 04 ranger with the 2.3 Liter engine? Looking to lift it with the fabtech 3" lift but I dont want to sacrifice any power or mileage.

if your concerned about mileage (lets face it, thats why you have a 4 banger), dont lift it. you will loose mileage with a lifted truck.

^^^ Agreed. If you lift it you can re gear it to get you back to stock power or even more. Luckily you have a 2wd so that means you only need to re-gear one end. Unfortunately, with larger tires and a lift, you will only kill mileage due to the extra rolling resistance of the tires and the wind resistance from the wind.

Ok, forget mileage. Prices are dropping, but what kind of performance parts are there?

Not too terribly much that I can see gaining anything. Bama makes a tuner but I doubt you gain as much as claimed on a gas engine. These engines have been turbo'd in the Focus, but I have yet to see it done on a Ranger.

gas prices arent going to stay down. they'll be back up to $4+ a gallon next summer.

might want to think ahead a little.

a tuner is a good way to go on any OBDII vehicle. that will give you the most bang for your buck. another option is regearing the rear axle...depending on what gearing and tire size you have/plan on running.

stay away from things like "cold" air intakes and exhaust systems...there are no improvements to be had here.

A turbocharger makes a nice bolt on.



Until you blow the engine up and realize that turbocharging is more than bolt-ons.

Other than that, stay stock and be happy with what it is.
