So I know this is a bit of a commonly asked topic and it usually seems to be asked by someone who is on a tight budget. I want to put together a list of things you guys go to in order to build horsepower.

Lets try to keep things to relatively low budget mods.

Okay. Go now.

The undoubted first thing I would do is mill the head. Take .075"-.125" off the head surface. This will up your compression and mke everything else you do to it more beneficial. This can also be done for less than $120 usually with new intake and head gaskets. After that follow this order.

#1 camshaft (don't use any stock cams, they all suck..)

2 header

3 carb

4 head porting.

Do NOT do, cold air intake or "chip" mods, waste of money.

More power is simple, increase fuel burning capacity or reduce weight of the load.
If you put the stock 2.3l in a 300lb go cart it would go like hell, lol, but it is in a 3,000lb truck so goes, but not like hell :)

A 4.0l V6 has more power than a 2.3l I4 because it has 1.7l more fuel burning capacity.

A turbo charger increases the air density in the intake so more fuel can be added, so increases the fuel burning capacity.

Bigger Cams, allow more air in so more fuel can be burned

Headers don't add any power, but they can shift the power band lower so you get faster acceleration, but lose some top end, and visa versa, stock exhaust is set up for mid-range power band.

If its High miles dont do any thing, leave it alone, any mods you make will put more load on already worn parts, cheap is keep tire pressure up and a full tune up and clean filters, raise the compression will put more load on old rings and bearings, but is what will give most bang for the buck along with a mutli-angle valve job and a port match, but expect to buy the good gas at the pump

Get yourself a good used V8,mount in the truck bed,add secondary ignition switch, add propeller and hang on :icon_rofl:

v8

Vstar dont make fun of that Idea, I considered doing a 455 olds with a 1966toranado drivetrain, but the newer rear section would have to be cut off, cause there not as strong as the older ones even boxed:icon_welder::icon_thumby:

Who has a rough hp estimate of a 2.3 with a milled head and a moderately aggressive cam (we'll say stage 1 type) on a freshly rebuilt and otherwise stock, carbed engine.

Awesome. My motor is going to the shop pretty soon. I just finished tearin her down the other night.

On my 85 I'm doin a bottom end rebuild, a comp cam, milling the head, a Holley 350cfm carb and a duraspark ignition. I priced it out the other day to around $1k. Not exactly cheap but definitely not bad for a full rebuild and almost double the hp give or take.

2.3

Be sure you get NEW valve springs, and new rockers, these parts should always be replaced not just checked, on a new cam, if they do it right, sounds like your on the right track, you may want to get an adjustable cam shaft timing belt sprocket so you can dial in where you want the most power

Yeah I was planning on new rockers for sure. They're the reason that motor had to come outta the truck in the first place. Thanks for the heads up on springs and the cam gear. I might have over looked those if someone hadn't of said something.

Don't forget to mill the head, my hp estimate is for the upped compression of a .100" shaved head.

Absolutely. What does that raise the compression to?

Somewhere between 9.7&10.2 you can run 87 octane if you time the ignition right.
