So trucks been doing this since day one that I've had her. In every gear except first, I start getting a real back jerk, sputter hesitation whatever u may call it. Now it's only when the truck in is the lower rpm range bit sure when stops don't have tach. If I ease into the gas it's most the time good but with onyly a 112 hp motor with 245k miles on it u can really do that. So I need help figuring out what is causing This. Can answer any question to help solve this problem. Thanks

Check the throttle position sensor, and maf sesnsor. One is probably not working.

I believe we cleaned them at one point. I got another maf I could try throwing it on there

I was talking to a guy earlier, he was sayin to check vac lines, and said 95% of the time it's a bad vacuum line, later imma take a look and see if any are bad, replace and see if it helps, I'll post results

If it does work OK in first all the way through to the shift...I'd say something else...is this a 5 spd manual or automatic?

Could be vac lines, but you'd see that through all gears I'd imagine. There aren't too many vac lines on a 97 from what I recall (currently looking at a 96 which should be similar).

Sounds more like a modulator for an auto tranny from what I recall of driving one...not sure if they even have those any more though...

First gear will do it but it's if I let it get down to like 4mph then try creeping back up real quick

It might be incorrect fueling, but it might also be your expectations. When I first got my 4cyl the lack of torque would drive me insane-I was previously spoiled by an I5 diesel.

Your other trucks are a v8 and the 4.0, and your username is a 5.9 cummins. The little 2.3 is great but it's totally gutless compared to any of your other engines.

EDIT: When I put in all synthetics, an electric fan, and moved to a tubular header with the cat right up against the header I got more torque. I don't know which item gave me the most umpfh, as we did it all in one shot. Just another tidbit for you.

Oh yeah, explorer gauge clusters swap right in for a tach-no extra wiring needed.

Check your tps with a mulitimeter for a dead band (read= spot)also pull the vacuum line on the egr valve, plug the line, to eliminate a problem there, then see what happens

I don't think its a vac line, mine had a similar problem when the vac line came off the map sensor, but it only ran at full throttle and poured smoke all the time. Your truck however does not use a map sensor.

I don't think it's a vac line. From what I think I know, doesn't vacuum only exist when at idle? And anything past idle it doesn't really matter?

When u say incorrect fueling, u mean maybe bad pump or restricted flow? Like too much or not enough fuel?

Gas engines always run with vacuum except at wide open throttle. You obviously are a diesel guy. Diesel engines don't have any vacuum because they control fuel to change rpm. Gas engines control the air flow and fuel. It could be many things, but lack of power with black smoke is over fueling, no smoke probably means under fueling

I know how diesels work. Black smoke= to much fuel. In a diesel it's always better to have a little extra fuel. But this is a 2.3 gaser lol
