well a little over a year ago i picked up a header for my '88 ranger for when i go to put the new 2.3 in i would put it on instead of the manifold, i just recently came upon a possible problem of some sorts.

With the exhaust manifold you have this metal tube going from it and connecting up to the air intake for the 2.3. My problem is, how am i going to hook up my header without this tube connecting to the air intake manifold?

heres a link to the header i bought. Its a cheap header but im fine with it.

That depends very much on where you live. Where I live right now any vehicle, 1975 and up is only subject to a visual anti-tampering check and a gas cap integrity check. Back home 75 thru 95 are subject to the same and 96 and up get the OBDII check with gas cap. Out by philly and pittsburg everyone 91 and up get a smog test, 90 and back just get a visual and gas cap. Find out what your local regs are and see is not having that hooked up will allow you to pass. that may just be for CARB cert vehicles.

ok i will have to look into that. So if i can put on the header, how would i go about doing it? since i wouldnt be using any of the exhaust manifold hardware.

It appears you purchased the long tube header...this is usually used in racing applications, but should work nonetheless for you...

That tube is for the warm air to get to the carb while the engine is warming up...once the engine is actually at operating temperatures it is not needed...

If you want to try to connect it for cold weather starting (I haven't had mine connected for at least two Canadian winters and didn't really notice anything different) you might go to the junkyard and find the connector on a 93 or up Ranger 2.3 and try to install that on your long tube header...it might not fit exactly, but it will allow some warm air to be drawn into the carb...

If it's just a pre-heater tube, it doesn't make that much difference...it does help, but it's not needed for either emission testing or engine operation...if you park inside a garage it is usually not needed at all...

It is supposed to help the engine warm up faster, or, at least, "gently"...the truck still has to start on freezing cold air and a few minutes of sucking in the same freezing cold air without load shouldn't hurt...

But, alas, it was put there for a reason so I guess it would be a matter of finding a suitable cover to attach the hose if you want it...I'm pretty sure the one from the shorty header could be adapted quite easily...just in case someone wants it to be there for emission testing...

Your call~

ahhh ok thanks. Makes a lot more sense now.

My apologies...I just realized what you were talking about...it must be the EGR tube that the long tube headers don't have a bung for...and that is required for emission testing...but not necessarily for engine performance...but you might get a CEL light if your EGR is not working or connected properly...

The shorty headers (some) have a bung that you can attach the EGR tube too...but if yours does not, you would need to drill a hole and have a bung welded onto the header for the EGR return to connect to...

This has actually been covered under both the 2.3 engine forum and the exhaust forums...

I will PM you in case you miss this post...

Got it...reply returned...sorry about the confusion...:)
