im doing some work on the 2.3 out of my ranger. my plans were to replace the main seals and head gasket. i pulled the head off and i couldnt really tell any leaking on the gasket. im pretty sure it was burning water, and there was pressure in the radiator. there were 2 head bolts that had rusty threads idk if that has anything to do with it. i figure i might have a cracked head. a few of the valves are white also. any words of wisdom would be great

I would have the head checked by a machine shop for cracks.

ditto...have them magnaflux test it for cracks...that is the first step on a rebuild anyways, and if the head isn't cracked, check the block (visually with a magnfyer if possible) and look at the piston walls...if this is a 2.3 the walls are pretty thick, but they can crack...and that would put water into the piston and the oil...check the oil for floating water and/or anti-freeze...
