This 89 ranger of mine,a 2.3l by the way, if you have the a/c running and you knock it out of gear while coming to a stop a lot of times the motor will go dead. It doesnt do it when the a/c is not running. It has done this for several years. Doesnt really hurt anything but it is a nuisance. I pulled the engine out earlier this year and completly resealed it and cleaned everything. All the egr components were stopped up. But everything is in good working order now. I was hoping the dying problem would dissapear when it put the motor back in but it did not. I have even raised the idle about 100 rpms with the idle screw to see if that would help but it did not. It doesnt throw any codes and other wise runs perfectly but just dies when you let it come to a rolling stop while the a/c is on. Any thoughts on what is causing that?? I havent replaced the idle air control valve but I did clean it along with the throttle body and the intake. And all the vacuum hoses are in good working order.

Yes, new fuel filter and the fuel pressure is within spec KOEO and KOER. Also just put a new set of injectors in it to see if it would help with the fuel mileage, which it has. But that had no effect on the dying issue.

Do the brake lights work? Almost sounds like the computer doesn't know what's happening.

Yes the brake lights work. The electrical system is in good working order. Everything electrically works. All the light gauges tach and even the window washer. The whole truck is in excellent condition especially being an 89 model this dying while coasting to a stop is it's only quirk. Now if I gear it down coming to a stop it doesn't die but ifyoukick it into neutral and let it coast is when it dies. To my knowledge it's never had an idle air control valve put on it. It might just be wore out to the point it can't react quick enough. I just haven't took the time to really trouble shoot it cause it's not keeping me from driving it I just thought it might be a problem that some one else has encountered and could save me some trouble.

Not in a Ranger but I have had the exact same problem. Its extremely annoying. Happened in my old Mazda protege and it was the iac. Not 100% guaranteed to be the fix sins its a different vehicle, but it was the solution to my identical problem.

Given all that it may be the IAC.

I know that for a while the 4 bangers would die with the A/C on when stopping. They switched it up so that the A/C would shut off for a second when the brakes were applied.

Cant say that I ever noticed the compressor kicking off when I hit the brakes. Being such a low horsepower engine there is a distintive change in rpms when the compressor cycles on and off. But I will check that. Gonna try a new idle control valve and if that doesnt fix it might look to wiring a relay in like your talking about, to the brake lights, to kick the compressor off.
