2.3 engine knock

I have a slight, but noticable engine knock. I had a problem with the engine draining oil back into the pan because of a faulty oil filter installation by the person I let borrow the vehicle. Now I notice this knock. I am thinking that it would be valvetrain related because of the number knocks. Is this something I should ignore and run into the ground or where should i go

1st check your oil level. Then check your timing belt. If you are still set on valve train noise check the tapetts for proper clearance in their collapsed state ( desired: .040-.050 allowable: .035-.055 gap). You'll need a valve spring compressor adaptable to a ratchet, feeler gauge set, and a micrometer or caliper set.
If the clearance is within tolerances remove and check and clean the cam follower for wear or damage.
If the cam follower is good check the valve spring dampener assembly height to ensure a valve is not sticking. If all is good still then check cam shaft dimensions with a micrometer of calipers. If all is good with the cam shaft dimensions remove clean and test the lash adjusters. Install the lash adjuster and check for clearance.

you can track a noise close enough to figure
out what it is pretty quickly.
